The Ghent Altarpiece was dismantled and hidden twice for protection from outbreaks of destruction of religious images--the iconoclastic riots in Europe during the sixteenth century. The Calvinistic Republic also threatened Ghent Altarpiece in its attempt to "reform" the practices of the Roman Catholic Church.
