The author states that transistors have shrunk but increased in usefulness.
When transistors were first made, they were huge - a similar thing happened to computers: when they were created, they were as big as a room, and look at them now! Transistors have become smaller and smaller over time, however, they have also become more and more useful, perhaps because of their shrinking size.
