Who was Hernan Cortes & why was he important?

Hernando Cortez' was one of Spain's conquistadors and explorers who conquered the Aztec empire in much of what is now Mexico. This was around 1520. He gave to Spain an important base of colonial power and its gold and silver from the New World.
