Answer - Ann was upset when the gray owl fell beneath the ice because it was her friend and it helped her train the dogs the for the show. She realized how mysterious and mythical this world can be and to end on a good cause the water that was in the lake had been drained out so the owl just fell to the bottom and Ann was so relieved.
