First you need to change the fractions to have the same denominator.

9 1/2 = 9 2/4 + 7 3/4

Then you just add across and simplify.

9 2/4 + 7 3/4 = 16 5/4 = 17 1/4.

You should get 17 1/4. Good luck!

9 1/2 = 9 2/4 ( 2/4 and 1/2 are equivalent)

7 3/4= 7 3/4 (You can keep that the same)

9 2/4+ 7 3/4 = 16 5/4 (9+7=16 2/4 +3/4 =5/4)

16 5/4=17 1/4
