How did religion affect/lead to the spread of Indian empires in 600bce-600ce?

Buddhism led to the spread of Indian empires because for the first time in Indian history, India had a common ground to unite under and this led to India becoming stronger as a nation. India was able to have most of its architectural feats that are now renowned during this time because of religion.
