When Columbus came to the New World, he made a mistake and thought that he had found a new direct route to India, so he called the natives "Indians", which they are sometimes still referred to as to this day. Hope that helped! =)
Colombus thought he was on an island near the coast of India, he called the natives "Indians." Even after they discovered it wasn't India, the name stuck.
