If the president nominates a candidate for the supreme court, the senate has got the power to accept or reject this candidate.
This comes out of the provision of the constitution, that the senate shall have the powers to accept or reject president nominations to the executive and judicial branches.
A supreme court candidate falls under the judicial branches.
