1) geography - the country is landlocked and has no port to encourage sea trade;
2) education - the country has high illiteracy rates;
3) politics - the country has a history of political unrest including a civil war for many years
4) brain drain - many educated Nepalese leave the country so they can find better living standards and opportunities elsewhere
