When x = -1

x³ + x² - x - 1 = 0

∴ (x³ + x² - x - 1) ÷ (x + 1) = x² - 1

If x + 1 = 0

x = -1

and x² - 1 = 0

x = 1

From (2), when x= 1 or -1: R(x) = 0
