Scalars have just magnitude, but vectors have magnitude /and/ direction. This is why speed, a magnitude describing how fast something is, is not a scalar quantity; but velocity, which is speed and a direction, is.

Speed is classified as a scalar quantity and does not describe the direction.

Velocity is classified as a vector quantity as it describes both magnitude and direction.
