Church leaders oppose the practice of simony because they see in it an instrument of evil practices forbade by holy laws. Buying or selling of holy orders would be seen as a corruption of the holy system of God. It shows the influence of wealth on the spiritual system. Moreover, these contracts degraded the position of popes as these sins and virtues were treated as commodities which were regulated by their authority.
