Lincoln's assassination put the future of the nation in question because the lack of leadership made it harder to deal with the challenges after the war. One effect of his death was that now the Republican party lacked the leadership that was needed to safely readminister the South into the Union. Because of this there was conflict between Congress and the new president Andrew Johnson which created more challenges.
