Examine the map. Then identify which states seceded (broke away from) the Union before April 14, 1861, and which seceded after that date.
According to the Map, eleven US states broke away from the union before April 14 1864 and these states were nicknamed the Dixie.
They include the following which formed the confederate States of America, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Vir.ginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
The States of Kentucky and Missouri also had declarations of secession and full representation in the Confederate Congress.
Vir.ginia states representatives voted to leave the Union after April 14. 1861.
What was the Confederacy?
The Confederate States of America was the 11 states that left from the United States in 1860 after the election of President Abraham Lincoln. The confederacy was led by Jefferson Davis and they existed from 1861 to 1865,althought they were never recognized as a sovereign nation.
