How did New England's physical geography help the growth of cities?

It was near water (the Atlantic ocean), so it had ports and therefore cities would grow around ports and bays because of the need for trade and transportation (for example, Boston Harbor). There may be more, but I feel as though this is an important point to bring up. Hope this helps!! :)
