Serious composition was influenced by folk and popular music. The main idea behind folk music is that it originated by being music that anyone could play, because it was played by ordinary everyday people. Instead of being played by classically trained musicians, folk music and a lot of the popular music during the classical period was played by normal, ordinary 'folks'.
