I believe the answer is: use prayer and altered thinking to correct the causes of illness and disease
We construct our perception on the things that happen to us based on our inherent belief . So, when a certain religion teach the followers that illness could be cured/altered by prayers, those followers would most likely see that getting better from an illness as a direct result from their prayers, even though it may caused by the medicine.
