I think the cold war was a particularly dangerous time in world history because it contained a fragile balance between the part involved that, if broken, could cause a massacre of epic proportion. The ability and capacity of both main parts were astounding, and so the time was particularly dangerous because everyone understood that it would take only a tiny flame to make up for an enormous deflagration.
