The function of the goblet cells is to produce mucus that protects parts of the digestive organs from the effects of powerful enzymes needed for food digestion. These cells are found scattered among the epithelial lining of organs such as the intestinal and respiratory tracts. They are secretory epithelial cell lineage found in both the small and the large intestines, their major function is to form protective gel-like layer over the surface epithelium and also protects against bacteria invasion.
