Why did the nineteenth-century southern economy remain primarily agricultural?

The South's landscape was more fertile and rich than in the North. Wide and vast fields also contributed to large plantations for producing cash crops, such as tobacco and cotton which was very profitable. The area was also driven by slave labor that favored plantation agriculture.
